The Kiwanis Club of Oklahoma City began the tradition in 1923, when members conveyed children from Oklahoma City area orphanages to an outdoor activity and picnic—from city parks to locations such as Springlake Amusement Park, Frontier City or White Water. Ice cream, even before modern widespread refrigeration, was part of the first picnics!

Over the years, much has changed. Youths are rarely orphans. Kiwanians don’t transport kids in their own cars. The Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children organization has multiple campuses and myriad services for children and youths. Boys Ranch Town, begun in 1953, now has a transitional program.

“Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children is now the largest provider of private, non-profit residential child care in the state.” www.obhc.org

This year the outing for OBHC staff, houseparents and children was White Water. Kiwanis Chair for the picnic is Randall Stoner. Kiwanis Club President is Kraettli Epperson.

For 90 years, Kiwanians view the day as an encouragement to the children and a salute to the OBHC supporters, staff and houseparents who do the real work daily.
