95th Children's Christmas Party

December 8, 2014

The Kiwanis Club of Oklahoma City celebrated its 95th Children’s Christmas Party at Andrew Johnson Elementary School in Oklahoma City.

Kiwanians, shopping for their students, spend about $40 per child for gifts, which can be reimbursed from the club’s Kiwanis Special Activity Fund, a 501 (c) (3). Many of the members, though, do not turn in their reimbursement requests.

Members brought gifts and stuffed Christmas stockings for more than 78 children. Extras stockings and gifts are required, although teachers provide gift lists with students’ photos and names weeks prior to the event! Kiwanians, shopping for their students, spend about $40 per child for gifts, that can be reimbursed from the club’s Kiwanis Special Activity Fund, a 501 (c Before the party started, Kiwanians and guests gobbled down their favorite catered fare—Earl’s Barbeque.

A festive event, visits from Santa Claus, Chester the Clown, and Rumble, OKC Thunder’s mascot, really made this time even more memorable.

Oklahoma City Public School buses loaded with youths and their escorts pulled up to Andrew Johnson Elementary. Selected attendees also included students from Rancho Village, Martin Luther King Elementary, and Ridgeview Elementary Schools.

Nine elves dressed in blue tee-shirts and Santa caps—Key Club members from Southeast High School—caroled and passed out food and gifts to the children. All enjoyed having their photos made with Rumble. So did the adults! Mary Cloos is the faculty sponsor of this highly goal-oriented and service-driven Kiwanis-sponsored youth leadership club at SEHS.

The only negative note to the club members was that our beloved, long-time emcee, Lucien Jones, was not able to attend this year. Amazingly, the party succeeded anyway, but we missed him.

Special thanks also goes to Margaret Saunders Simpson, Andrew Johnson’s principal and the party site hostess, and to Michael Mongu’s mother Patience Bakimdo for allowing the photo for public release.

For grins, read Rumble’s story. http://www.nba.com/thunder/rumble/story.html
